Assessing uncertainty in radar measurements on simplified meteorological scenarios

چکیده

A three-dimensional radar simulator model (RSM) developed by Haase (1998) is coupled with the nonhydrostatic mesoscale weather forecast model Lokal-Modell (LM). The radar simulator is able to model reflectivity measurements by using the following meteorological fields, generated by Lokal Modell, as inputs: temperature, pressure, water vapour content, cloud water content, cloud ice content, rain sedimentation flux and snow sedimentation flux. This work focuses on the assessment of some uncertainty sources associated with radar measurements: 1. absorption by the atmospheric gases, e.g., molecular oxygen, water vapour, and nitrogen; 2. attenuation due to the presence of a highly reflecting structure between the radar and a “target structure”. RSM results for a simplified meteorological scenario, consisting of a humid updraft on a flat surface and four cells placed around it, are presented.

Efficiency of Target Location Scenarios in the Multi-Transmitter Multi-Receiver Passive Radar

Multi-transmitter multi-receiver passive radar, which locates target in the surveillance area by the reflected signals of the available opportunistic transmitter from the target, is of interest in many applications. In this paper, we investigate different signal processing scenarios in multi-transmitter multi-receiver passive radar. These scenarios include decentralized processing of reference ...

Segmentation for radar images based on active contour

Weather radar data quality control is extremely important for meteorological and hydrological applications. For weather radars, scatterers in the atmosphere are not only meteorological particles like cloud, rain drops, snowflakes, and hails, but also non-meteorological particles such as chaff, insects, and birds. For radar meteorologists it is a major issue and challenge to design numerical sch...

The Effect of Clustering on the Uncertainty of Differential Reflectivity Measurements

One of the most important avenues of recent meteorological radar research is the application of polarization techniques to improve radar rainfall estimation. A keystone in many of these methods is the so-called differential reflectivity ZDR, the ratio of the reflectivity factor ZH at horizontal polarization backscattered from a horizontally polarized transmission to that corresponding to a vert...

Improved Polarimetric Calibration for Atmospheric Radars

Polarization properties of radar waves that are scattered from atmospheric objects are of great interest in meteorological studies. However, polarimetric radar measurements are often not sufficiently accurate for retrieving physical properties of targets. To compensate for errors, radar polarimetric calibration is applied. Typical calibrations are performed based on measurements of point target...
